The Republicans - Bush and cohorts - were winning everything in 2000 and 2004 and Bush had survived some pretty close calls in the White House races. Then, November 7, 2006 rolled around and the Republicans finally lost control of the House and Senate.
Given the gut-wrenching (for Democrats and Republicans) "George W. Bush" election travails of the last 6 years, who would have thought that Bush would have allowed himself rendered into a "lame-duck" during the last two years of his presidency? Certainly not Usedcarsalesman.
See, the following post from a few weeks ago, http://www.usedcarsalesman.com/2006/09/usedcarsalesman-speculates-on-how-bush.html
Usedcaresalesman figured that Bush would play a hypothetical "hole card" - Bin-Laden would be wheeled out in an October/November '06 surprise and, together with lowered gas prices in the U.S., Republicans would again win and piss themselves laughing at the Democratic Party, post-Bill Clinton. Heck, Usedcarsalesman even heard Bill Clinton was asking about Bin-Laden a few weeks ago. But, a Bin-Laden release didn't happen.
Why?
1. The U.S. military never nabbed Bin-Laden in the first place.
Usedcarsalesman still seriously doubts it. Come on, a U.S. national election went by more than a week ago and the biggest "on-the-run" "terrorist-with-resources" around didn't have 5 minutes to make a scary video tape and mail it to the New York Times for political effect? Usedcarsalesman doubts it. It's like Count Dracula passing up a Virgin neck after making do with rat-blood for two years - not going to happen.
2. In a fit of placing long-term national security before short-term political victory, Bush and his strategist, Karl Rove, decide not to show that they've cut off the head of the figurative serpent (Bin Laden), so that 10 more heads won't spring up in its place and threaten the U.S.
Usedcarsalesman says, "Gimme a break. In politics, it probably doesn't matter if a thousand 'terrorist' snake heads grow back in place of the 'first.' The important thing is that you use the one you've cut-off to maintain power! Better your party be in control and managing the fight versus a thousand new terrorist heads than not-in-control (the now, "Minority" Republican Senators and Reps now having plenty of time to try out their new Playstation 3s procured by loyal, line-waiting legislative assistants at the Pentagon City and Potomac Mill's Malls (haha :)
3. Bin Laden is seriously ill (meaning, "not camera ready") at some "black-bag" hospital hollowed out of an Allied-Coalition-Nation Member's-Embassy in Pakistan.
Usedcarsalesman speculates that, "ding, ding, ding, #3 might be a possible winner by default here." It's not exactly 'habeas corpus' in terms of "proving" the Bin Laden in custody theory, but it's the option that does seem to make sense.
Then again, Bin Laden may actually still be on the run and staying alive by holding double-header "How-To-Stay-On-The-Run-From-THE-MAN clinics in North Korea with D.B. Cooper. Who knows? :)
